The 2019 Bridport Charter Fair was held on Saturday 28th September.
The Charter Fair has for many years celebrated an important point in the Town’s heritage and its subsequent development – the granting of the first borough charter by Henry III in 1253 that allowed Bridport to hold a market. It also enabled Bridport to manage its own trade, impose port tolls and dispense justice through the quaintly named “Pie Powder Court”.
In 1554 the right to hold a twice weekly market was reconfirmed by Queen Elizabeth I and, today, Bridport’s Market is rated in the top ten street markets nationally.
We believe that our Town, our Community, would not have the character and identity that it has without its famous market.
We believe that this heritage is worth remembering and worth celebrating.
